WORLD FAMILY FORUM

Member Information:

The concept of World Family originated in the early fifties by a team of renowned social activists, academics, professionals, thinkers and reformists who were deeply moved with the pathetic conditions of teeming millions of half fed, half naked and homeless in the city of New Delhi  from a small room in the X-Ray Department of the Holy Family Hospital. Prof. Dr. Shyam Swarup Sharma, Heading the Hindi Department at the famous Jamia Milia Islamia University, envisioned World Family.  It started working for the upliftment of dalits, under-privileged and excluded people residing in thatched huts in the Harijan Colony.  They were identified as the neediest amongst all.  Emphasis was laid on personal hygiene and cleanliness as they lived under horrifying condition.  Lack of sanitation, water and cleanliness were destroying their lives.  Soon small groups of concerned citizens spread beyond the horizon of India.  World Family groups sprung up in Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland Japan and America to effectively tackle local problems through mutual co-operation.  In America, the problem of racial apartheid was at its peak; just as caste based discrimination was devastating racial harmony in India. World Family conducted a series of studies on the problem of racial discrimination in America and caste discrimination in India to find lasting solutions.  However, World Family lacked the organizational thrust and became inactive with the passage of time.  It needed revival.  On 11th April 1996 World Family was revived under the Indian Trusts Act by Mr. Manmohan Shastri, a social activist, popularly known as ‘Good-Do’.  World Family was later restructured as World Family Forum on 13th February 2004 in the city of New Delhi.
